Hey Anthony,
I LOVE your site…been a while since i last spent 4 hours non stop on one website (knowing that i’m also a (web) programmer that is saying something
)
Anyway, i’m loving these lessons and they’re really helping me playing like the master although i keep running into this problem.
You see like this riff, SRV uses a lot of these crazy fast riffs in his slower blues songs. I absolutely adore them and think they are one of the key elements in Stevie’s songs. Anyway i can play some of these fasties without music, but when i use a backing track i totally loose timing since i can’t seem to find out the note lengths. They sound like they’re as much as notes pressed into a few measures but that can’t be right because otherwise it would be impossible to end on the right note on the right time. Do you know how to practice that effectively?

What you are describing is one of the most difficult hurdles to playing this style of music. The fact that you are aware of the need to improve is a sign that you’re on the right track. Some people play like crap their entire lives and never realize that if they would just tighten up the rhythm of their licks, time it out a little, and pay attention to the accents, their playing would go to a completely new level.

I love this solo, great job detailing the notes. A couple of comments:
At the beginning of the video, where you demo the solo, at the very end of that solo you add a few (very nice) ending licks, one of which is a slide up to around the 15th fret or so, where you play a small lick on the higher notes, which sounds really cool… any chance you could do a mini-lesson or a tab on these ending licks to this piece?
Also, in the one lesson I purchased, which is a great lesson (#32), it was really nice to have the backing track mp3 included, but one thing I found myself wishing for was a similar mp3 of you playing the piece along with the backing track (other lessons might already have this). This allows one to load it into a daw along with the backing track, for quick reference on how it’s supposed to sound while you’re working on it. I found this really useful on other “play-along” CD’s I’ve used. For this video, I found some software to extract the audio to create a plain mp3 of you playing it, but it took several steps…
I’m really enjoying this site, you are doing a fantastic job of opening up SRV techniques to players like me.

Hi Randy,
I’ve taught some other licks from Live At El Mocambo in the podcast so I’ll keep that one in mind.
I never thought about having the demonstration track included as an mp3. That’s a really good idea, and shouldn’t take me too long to do either! Keep a watch in the store, I’ll put it up there for a buck with the demonstration tracks for the other lessons as well. Great idea!
