January 14th, 2008

In this lesson, I show you how to play the intro riff to the song Pride and Joy by Stevie Ray Vaughan. I also explain the technique needed to play the rhythm pattern correctly. Parts 2 and 3 show the rhythm pattern.

I trying to learn this song, being the newbie Blues player that I am I have no clue were to get a more in depth view at the “chunka chunk” Rythm. I can’t seem to get the same tone as your guitar. Am I playing the chunka chunk wrong when I mute the up stroke and then mute the down stroke, but it doesn’t sound at all like the way you played it. Is there anything completly wrong that I am doing; and ps is there any other eaiser songs that have this chunka chunk technique?

    Hi Michael,

Without hearing you play it it’s hard to know what you might need to change. The only advice I can give is to make sure it’s precise, and keep strings from ringing out when your rake the string.

    Hi there,

Thanks so much for the kind words. I see a decent amount of pageviews from Brazil, so I know there’s at least a couple viewers down there!

Hey Anthony! I’ve been following all your lessons and there’s something that’s killing me on this particular one: I’m having a hard time figuring out how you do the rakes right at the beggining of the downpicked notes in the intro. From the video it doesnt seem like you’re muting the strings with your right hand, and also it doesnt look like you’re muting the strings with your palm either because your picking hand seems to move freely above the strings?!

I would be very grateful if you could explain this part a bit more in detail… thanks!

    Hi Anthony,

The Pride and Joy rhythm lesson really accelerated my learning curve. I’ve been struggling with that signature SRV shuffle for weeks. After watching your lesson a couple of times, I nailed it down and can also play the opening riff now. I just purchased the Blues Box lessons - keep it up!

I had a problem with the shuffle part of this song using 9 strings tuned 1/2 step down. Problem went away when i changed 10 strings

hehe……that’s a problem many people deal with. I always say Happy Wife = Happy Life. A good amp goes a long way, but a happy wife has more benefits……

Excellent. Can you give a quick rundown of your amp/guitar and effect settings used for this video??
    Thanks!!

Anthony Stauffer reply on January 17th, 2008:

    Hi Ed,

My settings are very similar to what I used in the Lenny, and Texas Flood amp demos. There are no pedals being used in this lesson. I’ll try to take a picture of the controls for each lesson from now on.

    Thanks for watching!

These are great. After following the rake lesson and this news ones, I believe I am starting to finally be able to “get it”.

I hope this is not out-of-line but somebody who SRV had a huge influence on is Henry Garza of Los Lonely Boys. He incorporates the SRV rake technique into his playing in a major way. If you like SRV, then I would recommend LLB too.

Lastly if you are taking requests :-), a video lesson on the last few bars of Crossfire where SRV strums rapidfire chords together with single note runs would be greatly appreciated. Been trying to figure that one out for a while.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Henry Garza is a great guitar player and an even better performer! Saw the live DVD and was blown away. The guy held the guitar out in front of him with one hand around the neck and continued to play it. Amazing.

I know exactly which part of crossfire you’re referring too and I’ll add it to my growing list of requests.
