Lesson 26 - More about the 5 blues boxesFebruary 11th, 2008 |
This is a followup lesson to the "5 Essential Blues Boxes for Guitar". There were a lot of questions about that lesson and I hope to answer those questions and provide more information on this technique.
Topics covered in this lesson:
- What does it mean to play in a certain key?
- How is this different than "Blues Scales"?
- How to extend the boxes at the top of the neck
- How to move the boxes to a new key.
The full 20 minute version of the lesson goes into more detail on all of these subjects.

Still waiting to find out some details on legal issues before I start on that. Apparently, note-for-note teaching has some different requirements. Want to do things the right way if I do them at all

Great stuff. Follow your box 1 and have seen it before and also the partial box 2…….but partial box 3 looks a little different from what I’m seeing elsewhere and it is a little confusing.
Here for example:

Am I looking at it incorrectly?

Anthony Stauffer ( StevieSnacks Teacher ) reply on February 12th, 2008:
Hi Ken,
What I’m teaching should be viewed as another view of the fretboard. It certainly shares some common things with traditional blues shapes like in the link you shared.
However, in order to understand what I’m teaching, it can’t be viewed as an “either / or ” situation. What’s shown in that diagram is correct. But what I’m teaching is another perspective on the fretboard, that happens to share some similarities.
It will become more clear over time why the boxes I’ve drawn are shaped the way they are, as opposed to traditional shapes. I’m focusing more on practical shapes that can actually be used for riffs. The boxes shown in the link you shared are very “technically correct” shapes, but they are not nearly as useful when it comes to playing a well-rounded blues style because they include a lot of notes that are hardly ever used and are structured mainly around the minor blues scale only.
