Podcast 12 - SRV Double Stop Pinch Technique

July 15th, 2008

This episode teaches a technique that you’ll hear used in songs like Cold Shot, Lenny, and plenty of other SRV tunes. Not very complicated, but a bit tricky considering you have to stop using your pick, but still hold onto it in your hand.

    Hi,

As usual, a very informative, interesting and well constructed video!

On the other hand, I have a small objection. I have seen quite a few videos of cold shot, and I am pretty sure stevie plays it the “normal” way, not with the “double stop pinch” technique (maybe not in the Austin video). If you could bring some precision on that, that would be great!

You may be right about Cold Shot, it does sound a little thicker than double stops on the album. I should have paid closer attention to that before putting it in the video. I’m fairly certain that there’s other times when it’s a double stop thing, as opposed to a bend, or even playing more notes in the chord. Maybe it was Lenny I was thinking about ……

When I do this lick. I hold the pick normally between my index and thumb and use my middle finger at the same time. so you dont have to palm the pick.

I’m assuming that if you’re using the pick and your middle finger, that you pick the lower note and pluck the high E string with your middle finger?

Great stuff. Buddy Guy does this a lot.
