Announcing OldToneZone.com - a place for tone seekersJuly 27th, 2008 |
Hey everybody,
Soon after I started StevieSnacks, I began to get questions about tone. And more questions, and then lots of questions. I thought to myself….”hmmm, I wonder if people are interested in tone….?”
Without any further ado, I’m pleased to announce the mini-launch of OldToneZone.com, complete with a single 1 minute video comparing the tolex Blues Junior amp to the Tweed version you see in all my videos here.
I made the decision to split off the gear stuff because not everyone who’s interested in gear is interested in Stevie Ray Vaughan, and it is my intent to keep a razor sharp focus on Stevie’s style on this site, simply because I think his style warrants such focus.
I will still do Stevie related gear demos and will post such things on both sites, but any more generic demos will go over to OldToneZone in the future. Can’t promise how often I’ll add videos there, but I’m trying to start simple the way I did here, until I find my groove.
Let me know any ideas you have for gear related videos….

Have you done any testing with various tube swaps?
Like changing the v1 for a 5751 instead of the 12ax7, or a 12at7 for v3?
I’ve heard a few recommendations for changing them out, but never any sound clips of what the amp with different tubes sound like.
I’ve also heard (no experience except for the stock Sovtek’s the amp comes with) that tubes from different manufacturer produce different tones.

Sorry I should have specified the amp I was discussing tube swaps on is the Blues Junior.

I used to have a THD Univalve and swapped tubes a couple times, but the amp sounded too much like a Marshall, so I could never decide what I liked best.

I think this is a great idea, and I even had something come to mind as soon as I read it! -
Pickups. There are a ton of videos all over youtube for pedals, amps, and the like. But it is so hard to find demos of pickups. I really like the way your Fralins sound, and I know I want to find some high quality electronics for my stock guitars. The only problem is that I have been researching relentlessly and can’t really make an educated decision without hearing the sound, dynamics, etc (Fralin alone has like 10 different Tele pups). All you can get are details about contruction, wounds, and general tone adjectives.
I really think doing pedals, amps, and guitars would be what most people are looking for — but if you could figure out a way to show off different pups on this site, you would be the only one out there doing it, and you would be helping a ton of guitar crazies like me.
Thanks for the lessons, you have really elevated my playing!

You read my mind sir. Without giving away my ideas, let me just say that I’ve got an idea in my head that would make doing side by side pickup comparisons very easy. At this point I can’t say how long it will be before I get to do anything that in-depth, but I’ve got plans and schemes

Great idea Anthony. I am on a tone quest, though I think a slightly different tone than you’re after, or perhaps two different tones. One is similar to what you have, the other is quite different: think british and les paul.
Anyhow, I look forward to seeing some good things on there. I am planning on a comparison between Fralin and Kinman pickups in the near future. I’ll let you know how that goes.
I’d also like to see some Fulltone pedals compared to the German-made pedals you use.

Hey Anthony, absolutly a great idea! You’re sites and music teaching is really taking off! I love the sound of the NOS by the way… both are great. I use a Hot Rod Deluxe 410, but I really think I may want to trade it for an NOS…. the 410 is just to much for what I do.
Anyway, I just wanted to stop by and give you the Kudos you deserve!

Hi Keith,
Once you’ve gotten used to 15 Watts, anything more than that is hard to get used to. Kind of a one way street in my opinion…

I do know what you mean…. Oh, I meant that my amp is a Deville, not a deluxe…. sorry, brain SNAFU! Keep up the good work. I know its an additional strain on you, but it is absolutly appreatiated! You videos are by far the best guitar training that I’ve used and the best value.
