Has anyone heard of Vintage Icon V6 Guitars?August 26th, 2008 |
Just a quick note to say that I’m back at home, the store is back open, and I’ll be answering some of the emails and comments that have piled up over the past week, but I probably won’t get to answer all of them, so just in case I don’t, just know that do read every one.
Vintage Icon Guitars
While in Sweden, I stopped by 4Sound in Umeå, where I ran across a brand of guitar I had never seen before. The tag said "Vintage Icon", and the company was John Hornby Skews, out of the UK. I noticed them immediately because they had that beat up, vintage guitar look.
While I’ll save my praises until after I get another chance to play one, let me just say that the guitars looked and seemed to play great. I didn’t have time to plug into an amp, but just playing it acoustically was very nice.
Has anyone ever played one of these, or heard of them before? I don’t think they’re too common in the US, so I’m hoping I can find one on ebay somewhere.

I got my Vintage V6 at Connecticut Music in Stamford, CT. I thoroughly enjoy mine, and unlike some prior comments, it didn’t need any real work or upgrades. The Poplar body gives it a nice resonant and “alive” tone. Don’t let anyone make up your mind for you — try one out if you can, and see if it’s right for you.

these things have a wicked tone. Very heavy solid body with a nice “feel” to the neck. The wilkinson pickups and hardware are top notch. For the money, a great buy. I have two of them and a 79 strat. The wikinsons have good tonal options. The differences in sound from bridge to neck etc are quite remarkable for a guitar at this price point. If you are looking for something that has great sustain and warm tone from a single coil guitar, and are not too hungup on a “name” I would highly recommend .

Hi Anthony,
The Vintage brand guitars are generally good value for money but you have to shop round for a good one. There’s plenty of scope for improvement if that’s what you want to do and I looked at the Vintage Strat as a base for a project I had in mind.In the end I went for a Richwood Vintage Strat because they are cheaper and IMHO better.I like mine so much I haven’t got around to modding it yet and it looks fantastic in Lake Placid Blue.I don’t know if you can get richwoods in the US but they’re easy enough to find on ebay uk.

Hey Anthony,
The Vintage Icons are pretty common over here in the UK, Ive seen quite a few in music shops etc. Your best bet is to probably look on the UK eBay. Which is ebay.co.uk, or you could try looking at an online music shop in the UK, and see if they ship internationally. Heres one if your interested:

hi Anthony ,,I own a vintage icon v 100 lespaul shape ,,they are really well done guitars ,the hardware is not perfect but spending a very few money you can easily get a medium quality guitar..I put a dimarzio the breed in the neck position and a dimarzio mo joe in the bridge ,it sounds awesome now ..it definately beats an epiphone,,pretty more comfortable than epi and gibson due to its thin neck..hope it helps.regards

Hi Anthony,
this a new UK band; hey are manufactured in Vetnam. The German Guitar Player Magzine “Gitarre & Bass” has tested a LP-Style guitar, and the results were very positive.
Meanwhile you can order hem e.g. in the geat Geman nline stores, like Music Store and Thomann
Hope hat helps!
Best, Eric

I played the LP copy at Daddy’s Music a while back.
It sounded great, needed much work to make it a daily player or “keeper”.
By the time your done fixing it up, your looking around $600.
Better off just pickn up a good Eppi LP and putting classic 57’s PU’s in it and be done for around the same price.
Not seen or played the Srat copy yet but, I would assume it will need simular upgrades.

Looks nice. Not too much “Vintage Processing” done to them.
I have not seen one personally but from other Korean manufactures, they are usually slammed together in a big hurry and the craftsmanship and care is not there. For many of these manufactures, it just something to sell, not a musical instrument for expression. Anyway.. My opinion.. Maybe they are great guitars.

There’s a store locally that got a couple in. I have to say that they seem to be a great starter guitar but need a little work.
The pickups on the one I tried (exactly like the one in the picture) sounded great and the guitar played extremely well.
The one downside was the fretwork on it. I found several loose frets on the new guitar as well as the sides of the frets needing to be filed down.
Other than that…I think it’s a really decent guitar.

Hi, I live in the netherlands and own a vintage icon series P-bass. Nice guitar but not in the line of fender. There in the “beginner” league but with some tweaking (pup change or w/e) you can make a nice guitar out of it but I don’t think they’re gonna beat a Fender
