Slow Blues Trainer

After releasing this series, I created a free Slow Blues Trainer, which combined licks from this series into a 60 bar slow blues solo. Although the video is free, when you purchase the series you get the tabs for this solo combined into one document.

Errors

At 3:52 there is a lick labeled as Box 1 Category 5, but it is in fact Box 2. This error occurs at 1:37 in the downloaded video since there’s no intro for that video.

FAQ

  • Q: What information is taught in these lessons

A: These lessons show you over 150 small and medium sized licks. Each lesson focuses on a single box, and the licks presented in that lessons are from that box. The last lesson teaches licks that are used to transition between boxes.

  • Q: Where do these licks come from?

A: The licks taught in these lessons are from my own playing. I spent many years trying to learn the style of Stevie Ray Vaughan so there’s a lot of his influence in these lessons. However, I am not excluding licks that I have learned and use that I did not learn from Stevie.

  • Q: How is this series different than the Essential Blues Boxes For Guitar Series?

A: The Essential Blues Boxes for Guitar series was created to introduce the concept of the 5 boxes. In that series, I explain what the 5 boxes are, how they connect, and I go through each box explaining how each note is used for this style of playing. However, there is no emphasis on teaching licks in this series because it’s about teaching this concept. Because I’m not teaching licks in that series, there is no tablature for those lessons.

This series, the 5 Boxes Essential Licks Series is the complete opposite. I repeat nothing from the previous series and focus exclusively on teaching the licks that can be played in each of these boxes. There is tablature provided for every lick in each lesson.

  • Q: Do I need to buy the Essential Blues Boxes series before buying this one?

A: No, but it will probably be helpful. The free previews for that series and the free PDF that I have on that lesson page might be enough if you have some previous experience with playing in this style. People who do buy that series will have a better understanding of the boxes and will probably feel more comfortable going into this series of lessons. At a bare minimum, you should go through the free previews for that series before buying this series.

  • Q: How difficult are the lessons in this series?

A: I think most of the licks I teach in this series are probably Intermediate (medium) difficulty. There’s a fair amount that will probably be with easy reach for beginners, and a few that border on advanced, but the bulk of teaching is in the intermediate difficulty level.
