Have you done any testing with various tube swaps?
Like changing the v1 for a 5751 instead of the 12ax7, or a 12at7 for v3?
I've heard a few recommendations for changing them out, but never any sound clips of what the amp with different tubes sound like.

I've also heard (no experience except for the stock Sovtek's the amp comes with) that tubes from different manufacturer produce different tones.

I attest to Anthony's customer service!! I had a slight delay in getting my download password by email. I was gonna give it 24 hrs. Working in computers and technology I knew there could be signal delays and various reasons. With in 8 hrs. he had noticed and solved the problem and emailed me personally with out me prompting the response. Not to say you shouldn't email him if your having issues, but he is on it and will take care of you!! Great guy, great lessons, a wealth of knowledge and well worth your money and time!! thank the Guitar Gods for Anthony!!!

Hey Anthony - I'm eaten up with blues and blues guitar. A guy I work with hosts a blues show here and knows I'm serious about building my chops and told me about your site - I can't thank you enough! This is the best instruction site for building blues chops I've found on the web, hands down. I've been trying desperately to break out and express myself, not only with SRV style licks and phrases, but flat out BLUES baby!! You've inspired me and shown me how to take it to another level. I can't thank you enough! - Dave

Hello Anthony

Bought several lessons, which help a lot in improving my playing.
Of course the big challenge is to play with the right speed.
I know that speed will be better each day that you practice the lessons, but do you also have specific ideas/exercises in how to improve speed ?
Lesson in future ?

Bye

Hey Anthony,

The Vintage Icons are pretty common over here in the UK, Ive seen quite a few in music shops etc. Your best bet is to probably look on the UK eBay. Which is ebay.co.uk, or you could try looking at an online music shop in the UK, and see if they ship internationally. Heres one if your interested:

hi Anthony ,,I own a vintage icon v 100 lespaul shape ,,they are really well done guitars ,the hardware is not perfect but spending a very few money you can easily get a medium quality guitar..I put a dimarzio the breed in the neck position and a dimarzio mo joe in the bridge ,it sounds awesome now ..it definately beats an epiphone,,pretty more comfortable than epi and gibson due to its thin neck..hope it helps.regards

Hi!
I'm Joakim from Sweden. Hope you had a great time in Sweden.
You and your site have helped me so much with my playing lately. And i haven't even bought a lesson yet!

Also, i have an idea - get up a forum running! Something for us SRV-fans and every other guitarplayer around the globe.

Thanks,
Joakim

Ahh yes (never seen the vid before)..
It's amazing how you can get the same notes at different positions & strings, however the TONE is the tell tale sign if it's being played correctly.
I'd have to submit though I think the last little bit is minutely different to what you play above. I think he's playing:

---------------------------
---------------------------
---------14-14--14 (14)-
---------14-16--14 (14)-
-14s16----------14h16--
---------------------------

However, I'd have to agree with your comment about this song not being set in stone, the freestyle nature of his improvisation during that video is vastly different than the recorded version on Texas Flood.

Obscure question: Do you (& Band) have any originals available to the public?

Thanks once again for all your time and effort put into this site, it's awesome! :)

Since it is so hard to find the older pedals, do you know if the same control/effects that you get with the parametric EQ pedals can be accomplished with the current Boss EQ pedals (GEB-7 Bass EQ 50Hz to 10kHz and the GE-7 EQ 100Hz to 6.4 kHz)?

Hi Darren,

For the lick I'm teaching in this lesson, it corresponds to the lick he plays near 8:08 in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEp2QLicd9Y and it's very clear that he's not playing it in box 5. There are a lot of similar licks that he played in box 5, but this one definitely starts at the top of box 1 and he kind of slides out of box 1 to the 5 chord (not to be confused with box 5) as I've demonstrated here.

What you are describing is one of the most difficult hurdles to playing this style of music. The fact that you are aware of the need to improve is a sign that you're on the right track. Some people play like crap their entire lives and never realize that if they would just tighten up the rhythm of their licks, time it out a little, and pay attention to the accents, their playing would go to a completely new level.

Hi Michael,

Without hearing you play it it's hard to know what you might need to change. The only advice I can give is to make sure it's precise, and keep strings from ringing out when your rake the string.

Hi Ken,

Nothing that I'm currently planning will nullify or overlap in great detail what I currently have for sale. The series I'm working on now is a compliment to the 5 Blues boxes series, teaching licks from each box, to add to the first series that taught the concept of the boxes, and discussed each box in great detail.

The comprehensive series I'll be doing after that mentions the 5 Boxes in a bigger context, but will not contain nearly as much information as is in the series already available.

Hi Heine,

It's difficult to compare the Rocketfire's to the Fralins because the Fralins have the advantage of being in a much, much, much, better guitar. However, the effect that the Rocketfire PUs had on the mexi-strat, reminds me a LOT of how it sounded back when I had a set of Fralins in it years ago.

I've actually used those strings, and I find them way too "muddy" for my tastes. I prefer strings with a little sparkle to them, which is why I'm currently using the D'Addario strings. (EXL series)

Hi Andy,

The blues deluxe is a different beast entirely, it's more than twice the power of the Blues Jr. so the settings will be different. I've not played through one very much, but I know they are quite loud.

G'day Anthony.
Firstly, love your work - you have an Excellent resource here for SRV lovers.

I remember learning Lenny from a transcript in the March 1991 edition of Guitar Player magazine (wow that's a long time ago now!).
After the first double stop hammer on the transcript plays the rest or the riff in what you would call your BOX 5.
Have you seen video of Stevie playing live to know for sure this riff comes out of BOX 5 at the end???

I could put the transcript up here but don't know if that's a copyright No-No. :)
Or contact me privately if you'd like to discuss.

I played the LP copy at Daddy's Music a while back.
It sounded great, needed much work to make it a daily player or "keeper".
By the time your done fixing it up, your looking around $600.
Better off just pickn up a good Eppi LP and putting classic 57's PU's in it and be done for around the same price.

Not seen or played the Srat copy yet but, I would assume it will need simular upgrades.

Looks nice. Not too much "Vintage Processing" done to them.
I have not seen one personally but from other Korean manufactures, they are usually slammed together in a big hurry and the craftsmanship and care is not there. For many of these manufactures, it just something to sell, not a musical instrument for expression. Anyway.. My opinion.. Maybe they are great guitars.

I have not seen one personally but from other Korean manufactures, they are usually slammed together in a big hurry and the craftsmanship and care is not there. For many of these manufactures, it just something to sell, not a musical instrument for expression. Anyway.. My opinion.. Maybe they are great guitars.

There's a store locally that got a couple in. I have to say that they seem to be a great starter guitar but need a little work.
The pickups on the one I tried (exactly like the one in the picture) sounded great and the guitar played extremely well.

The one downside was the fretwork on it. I found several loose frets on the new guitar as well as the sides of the frets needing to be filed down.

Other than that...I think it's a really decent guitar.

Hi, I live in the netherlands and own a vintage icon series P-bass. Nice guitar but not in the line of fender. There in the "beginner" league but with some tweaking (pup change or w/e) you can make a nice guitar out of it but I don't think they're gonna beat a Fender

Hi Anthony
If you do ever get a chance to travel, drop me a note.
My wife and i would love to take you Walleye fishing on one of Minnesota's best Walleye lakes, Big Winnie.
The offer is open and we have plenty of room.

Anthony,

I started playing guitar about 30 years ago and, until recently, have never learned to play lead. I've always been pretty much a singer-songwriter (James Taylor/Neil Young) type player. I've found your lessons to be very helpful and well done.

I, like you, am an electrical engineer and I'm very visual. The "boxes" diagrams have really helped me to see the shapes on the fretboard and that's what works for me. I've tried to learn from other players that have more of a theory based technique. That just doesn't sink in for me.

The other thing, I've found that a lot of guitar players, especially electric, who teach others are not so much interested in teaching as they are in proving how great they are. They will go on a 5 minute solo rant that's just an ego trip and doesn't help. I find that really annoying. I appreciate that you don't have that approach and that you seem genuinely interested in teaching other to play the same way you learned.

Keep up the good work. I'm glad I stumbled upon your website.

Hey Anthony,

I LOVE your site...been a while since i last spent 4 hours non stop on one website (knowing that i'm also a (web) programmer that is saying something ;) )

Anyway, i'm loving these lessons and they're really helping me playing like the master although i keep running into this problem.

You see like this riff, SRV uses a lot of these crazy fast riffs in his slower blues songs. I absolutely adore them and think they are one of the key elements in Stevie's songs. Anyway i can play some of these fasties without music, but when i use a backing track i totally loose timing since i can't seem to find out the note lengths. They sound like they're as much as notes pressed into a few measures but that can't be right because otherwise it would be impossible to end on the right note on the right time. Do you know how to practice that effectively?
