Playing With Soul - Part 7: Express Yourself

In the final lesson in the “Playing With Soul” series, I offer up some thoughts on one of the most important elements of soulful playing. While the other things I’ve talked about in this series are mechanical, this one is part emotional, part mental, and very, very personal.  The fantastic background music once again is used with permission from Tony Vega from the Tony Vega Band.  Please buy their CDs.  They are awesome.

Guitar

The guitar in this video is the Legend model guitar from Stauffer Guitars.  The body was co-designed by myself and Joe.  The neck is a warmoth maple neck with ebony fretboard, jumbo stainless frets, Hipshot bridge, locking tuners, and Lindy Fralin pickups.  Joe made the body, and assembled the guitar, polished the frets, and shielded the cavity.  It’s awesome.

Amp

The amp in this video is what I refer to as the “Blues Sr.” It’s basically a Fender Blues Junior amp chassis inside a custom built speaker cabinet housing a Jensen C15N speaker.  The cabinet was also designed and built by Joe at Stauffer Guitars.

Pedal

For the jam at the beginning, I’m playing through a Holy Fire Overdrive from Creation Audio Labs.  Since I was playing mostly rhythm and light leads in this video, I was only using the OD circuit, maxed out, with the treble cut also maxed, and the volume set to provide a minimal boost in level.
