When you encounter a difficult lick, don't just power on through it and move on. Find the trouble spots, and create a small, repeating drill, and do it over, and over, until you've worked out the rough spots. Tabs for the drill are below the video.
This is the only drill I did consistently but it had a huge effect on my development as a guitar player.

One viewer asked about any specific things I had done while learning guitar to build up speed, so I wanted to share an exercises that I came across on the internet while in college. It's one variation of a thing called Spider Exercises, and I credit this one exercise for at least 50% of my speed and dexterity. I used to do it all the time, and I consider exercises of this type crucial to developing hand-strength, dexterity and speed for playing guitar.
