Raking

Essential Techniques for Blues Guitar - Lesson 3

What Is It?

A one hour lesson all about the raking technique for blues guitar.

Who Is It For?

For advanced beginner and intermediate level guitar players who want to work on their muting and grip skills with real-world, playable exercises.

Detailed Description

The Raking lesson is an 'application' lesson. Instead of focusing specifically on Raking, the Raking lesson helps you solidify and test your Grip and Muting techniques by guiding you through 4 different examples of real guitar playing. Each example is designed to test your Raking/Muting/Grip skills in a different way.

The 4 examples are:

  • A "Cold Shot" style rhythm
helps you develop the ability to play single notes on one string while raking all the strings.

  • A "Pride And Joy" style 12-bar sequence

helps you develop the ability to play single notes on several strings while raking all the strings.

  • An aggresive lick in Box 1 on the E, B, and G strings

helps you develop the ability to palm-mute the lower-pitched strings while aggressively playing on the higher-pitched strings.

  • A "Lenny" style lick

teaches you about reverse rakes, and accenting rakes.

This lesson features closeup, slow-motion sequences of each thing that I teach, allowing you to do less rewinding, and see in better detail what's being played.  There is a strong focus on the picking, and muting for each part, and the majority of instruction is centered on those topics.

Supplementary Materials

The examples in this lesson come with tablature in PDF format. The tablature features picking direction, and fingering indicators for each note. Since the video instruction focuses on showing how to mute, pick and rake the strings, the tablature will be helpful for players who want to ensure they are playing the notes correctly.
